ENG: But think about this: they were exactly like us: Lived their private lives, tried not to do stupid things. In the morning they'd go to their job, afterwards - to a cabaret Or a pub, or return home for a family dinner. They had no Internet or TV But there were newspapers. And spirited marches In the streets sounding from the silvery cones on pillars, Whereupon there were flags everywhere, flaming and flapping. And what one could do, if the entire nation Shared the same sentiments... ...Sometimes, in order to try to save their souls and conscience, In their closest circles, where everyone Seemed to have known each other since the sandbox days, They would timidly express their doubts and even entered disputes... Only to regret it instantly, as their neighbors and friends Exploded with a patriotic outrage Accusing them for betraying the Fatherland; Mocked their 'pseudo-intellectual spinelessness' And strongly advised to decide which side They take... Sometimes thing would go down to threats, And then it was obvious that indeed there are people who Would convert those threats into a very real trouble. Just look at those two men in the corner watching attentively... ...And the fiery storm still was so far away. And, the newspapers said, Every day it got further and further. It seemed You could still live your little life on: Just keep working hard, sing in the choir in the end of the day, Talk to your neighbours on abstract topics alone... And in the evening sit silently in your unlit room, Listening to the pendulum... A few years later the survivors Would bitterly pull their lousy beer in wretched pubs. And those who used to object back then would again hear the blame: "What the hell were you doing? Those were you who should have Dispel those illusions! So why were you silent, Why didn't you write to the newspapers, Why didn't you go out in the streets?!" And those people, so similar to us, would again Had no words and no strength to speak up...
